Terms
Terms, in plain English
The short version: free lessons are free, no account needed. A membership opens every lesson, renews until you cancel, and you can cancel any time and keep it until the end of what you paid for. Lessons teach how business works; they aren't legal, tax or financial advice.
Takes effect: October 24, 2026
Who we are
TryOwning (tryowning.com) is run by Zihao Ye, a sole proprietor based in California, United States. “We” and “us” on this page mean them; “you” means you, the learner. These terms and our privacy page are the whole deal between us.
Using TryOwning
By using TryOwning you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site. Free lessons never need an account or a payment.
Your account
- You need to be at least 13 to make an account. To pay for a membership, you need to be an adult, or have a parent's or guardian's OK. Free lessons need no account, at any age.
- One account is for one person. Please don't share it.
- You sign in with Google or with a link we email you, so your email account is the key to your TryOwning account. Keep it safe. If you think someone else got in, use “Sign out everywhere else” on your account page (it shows when you're signed in somewhere else) and email us.
- You can download your data or delete your account any time from your account page.
The membership
- What you get: every lesson marked for members, for as long as your membership is active, including lessons we add later.
- The price: shown on the pricing page and again on Stripe's checkout page before you pay, with any sales tax where you live added at checkout. If we offer a free trial, the pricing page says how long it is, and your first payment is when it ends unless you cancel before then.
- It renews by itself: you pay monthly or yearly, and your membership renews at the end of each month or year, charged to the same card, until you cancel.
- Price changes: if the price changes, we'll email you before your next renewal at the new price, so you can cancel first if you like.
- Reminders: on a yearly plan, we'll email you before it renews.
- Payments and receipts: Stripe takes the payment for us and emails you a receipt each time. If a payment doesn't go through, members-only lessons close until it does; your progress is kept.
Cancelling
You can cancel any time: on your account page, choose “Manage payment or cancel.” You won't be charged again, and you keep your membership until the end of the month or year you've already paid for. Your account, progress and notebooks stay, and free lessons stay open.
Deleting your account is different: it ends your membership right away, along with everything in your account.
Refunds
We don't give partial refunds. When you cancel, you keep your membership until the end of the month or year you paid for, and there's no money back for the part you don't use. If something went wrong, like a charge you didn't expect, email hello@tryowning.com and we'll sort it out. Nothing here takes away a right to a refund that the law where you live gives you.
What the lessons are (and aren't)
- Education, not advice. Lessons teach how businesses work in general. They aren't legal, tax, accounting or financial advice for your situation. Before a real decision, talk to a qualified professional.
- Numbers are cited or labeled. Every number in a lesson is either cited to its source or labeled as a simplified example. Sources can be out of date, and examples are made up to teach a point, not to describe a real business.
- Rules vary by place and change over time. Where a lesson mentions a rule, it links the official page. Check it for where you are before you rely on it.
- Company names are lesson topics, not partnerships. Those companies don't sponsor or check our lessons.
- We work hard to get things right. If you spot a mistake, use “Spot something wrong?” on any page and we'll fix it.
Fair use
Please don't:
- copy lessons to publish, sell or share them somewhere else
- share your account, or get around the members-only check
- scrape the site, overload it, or try to break into it or other people's accounts
- send feedback notes that are abusive, spam, or full of other people's personal details
Using lessons to learn, take notes, or teach a friend what you learned is exactly what they're for.
Who owns what
The lessons, words, pictures and code of TryOwning belong to us. The sources we cite belong to their owners. If you send us a feedback note, we may use it to fix and improve lessons.
Closing an account
You can stop using TryOwning and delete your account any time. We may close an account that breaks these terms, for example one that's shared or used to copy lessons; we'll email to say why.
We may change, add or retire lessons as we go. If we ever stop offering memberships, we'll tell members by email first and stop charging, and give each member back the unused part of the month or year they paid for.
Our promises and their limits
We do our best to keep TryOwning working and correct, but it's offered as it is: we can't promise it will always be available or free of mistakes. As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for decisions you make based on a lesson, and if something goes wrong, the most we're responsible for is what you paid us in the 12 months before. Nothing here takes away rights you have under the consumer laws where you live.
Which law applies
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States. If we disagree about something, please email us first: most things can be sorted out that way.
When these terms change
The date at the top shows when these terms last changed. If a change affects your membership, we'll email you before it takes effect. If you don't want to keep going under the new terms, you can cancel before then.
