How Costco makes money
From Costco's 2026 annual report · Every number cited · Updated
The short answer
Costco makes money two ways: a store that sells at a very thin markup, and a membership card members pay for every year. In fiscal 2026 its warehouses sold $297.2B
The low prices make the card worth paying for, and the fees let the prices stay low.

Two businesses under one roof
Costco is really two businesses. One is a store: it buys goods and sells them to members. Of every $100
The other is the membership. Costco had 84.1 million
Costco doesn't split its running costs between the store and the memberships, so the fair way to say it is that the fees are equal to about half of the operating profit.
- Paying for the goods: $88.91
- Running the warehouses: $9.15
- Left for Costco: $1.94

The best customers pay more. Executive members, who pay the higher fee, were 42.3 million
Costco raises its fee rarely and by a little: by $5
